The role of protein restriction and BCAA restriction in metabolic health and Alzheimer's disease

Age-related diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and Alzheimer’s disease are major contributors to morbidity and mortality. Our lab has shown that modulating macronutrient composition, specifically through protein restriction (PR) or branched-chain amino acid (BCAA; leucine, isoleucine, valine) restriction can improve metabolic health. However, the mechanisms by which BCAA restriction enhances metabolic and cognitive health remain incompletely understood. My research investigates how protein and BCAA restriction improve metabolic health and delay Alzheimer’s disease by modulating key signaling pathways, including fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) and mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1).
